Sports facilities in Lincoln could soon be getting a much-needed boost under new plans.

Councillors will tonight discuss proposals to develop a new rugby pitch and revamp a cricket pitch.

Under plans put forward by the University of Lincoln, the rugby pitch could be developed on land known as The Backies in Moorland Avenue, Boultham Moor.

A cricket field at Sobraon Barracks in Burton Road could also be given a facelift that could see a new pavilion built alongside it.

The move could go some way to improving rugby and cricket facilities in Lincoln – both of which are seen by many as not being up to scratch.
Ted Robinson, chairman of the Lincoln and District Cricket League, said current facilities for his sport in Lincoln were "abysmal".

"We would welcome this, as we have constantly been lobbying the city council," he said.

"There's only the pitch on West Common, which would have made a better paddy field than a cricket ground.

"And the ground at the barracks can only be used for night cricket because there are no changing rooms."

Andy Owen, a community member at Lincoln Rugby Club, said: "There's a desperate lack of rugby facilities in the Lincoln area.

"Anything that adds to that is obviously to be welcomed."

The university has approached Lincoln City Council with the proposals in a bid to improve access to sports facilities for both its students and the wider community.
