Kansas City Chiefs Claim Historic Super Bowl LVII Win!

Kansas City Chiefs Claim Historic Super Bowl LVII Win!

We began back at the start of the season with. my predictions for who would make the playoffs and win their divisions (where I hit 4/7 in the NFC and 6/7 in the AFC) which was followed by a hugely dramatic opening week of the season.

We’ve then followed the drama over the course of the 18 week season and in truth, over that whole period and throughout the playoffs, two teams have definitely stood out as the best in each conference, so it is fitting that the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are the two teams that contested last night’s Super Bowl LVII in Glendale, Arizona.

And what a game it was with the Chiefs claiming a stunning 38-35 victory to land the Lombardi Trophy!

Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs was named as the Super Bowl MVP after a nerveless performance where the quarterback recovered from another bad twist to his ankle to hit 21 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 44 vital yards.

The victory saw fans of the Chiefs party long into the night celebrating their team crowning a great season with the title of World Champions.

Super Bowl LVII Review

First Quarter – Chiefs Win The Toss And Defer

After winning the toss, the Chiefs deferred receiving the ball to the second half and put the Eagles offense on the field and despite an initially slow start, the Eagles drove downfield on 13 plays before Jalen Hurts scored the first touchdown of the game.

It was an emphatic start by the Eagles, but it was one that was immediately answered by the Chiefs as Mahomes engineered an 8-play drive capping it with an 18-yard touchdown to Travis Kelce.

On the next play, the Eagles offense could only muster six yards before punting the ball away, however after receiving the ball back, the Chiefs drove 37 yards but Butker’s field goal attempt bounced away off the post to keep things level and handing the Eagles decent field position as the first quarter expired.

Score After 1st Quarter – Eagles 7-7 Chiefs

Second Quarter – Key Fumble And Mahomes Re-Injures Ankle

The second quarter saw the Eagles finish off the drive started in the first quarter with Jalen Hurts capping a 63 yard drive with a superb 45-yard touchdown pass to A.J.Brown to put the Eagles up 14-7.

The Eagles defense then forced the Chiefs to punt before arguably the crucial score of the entire game.

After driving 15 yards, the Eagles once again handed the ball off to Jalen Hurts to run with it, only the QB didn’t cleanly take the ball and he dropped it, accidentally knocking it away from himself with his foot.

Chiefs LB Nick Bolton recovered the ball at the Eagles 36 and raced into the endzone for a crucial defensive touchdown to bring the score level once again.

However, the Eagles QB showed huge character on the next drive, leading the Eagles downfield on a 71-yard drive that Hurts finished off with a trademark 4 yard run.

On their next possession, the Chiefs moved the ball 14-yards but on their seventh play of the drive, Patrick Mahomes was tackled and in the process of that, twisted his injured ankle once again.

Clearly in a lot of pain, Mahomes hobbled over to the sideline as the punt unit came onto the field and the quarterback’s return at that point looked questionable.

The half finished with the Eagles kicking a field goal as time expired to take a ten point lead into the interval.

Score After 2nd Quarter – Eagles 24-14 Chiefs

Third Quarter – The Comeback Starts

Chiefs fans were delighted to see Patrick Mahomes back on the field to start the third quarter and the Chiefs star man wasted no time in closing the gap to just three points as he drove the team 75 yards, allowing rookie running back Isiah Pacheco to score a one yard touchdown.

Next up it was the turn of the Eagles offense who drove 65 yards but had to settle for a field goal to increase their lead back up to six.

Those two long drives, as well as the start of another Chiefs drive meant that the Eagles led by six at the end of the third.

Score After 3rd Quarter – Eagles 27-21 Chiefs

Fourth Quarter – Toney’s Special Teams Play And Holding Penalty Call Proves Crucial

Continuing their drive started at the end of the third quarter, the Chiefs moved the ball 70 yards upfield and capped the drive with a 5 yard pass to Kadarius Toney, who took advantage of some miscommunication in the Eagles secondary to score a walk in touchdown.

The Chiefs now led for the first time in the game by a single point and their defense stepped up once again, forcing the Eagles to punt after just five plays on their next drive.

However, Kadarius Toney, pumped up from scoring just a few minutes previously, produced a key return on special teams, returning the ball from deep in the Chiefs territory to the Eagles five-yard line to put the Chiefs in perfect position to score.

Once again, the Eagles secondary was guilty of another breakdown in communication as Mahomes found Skye Moore for another walk-in touchdown, this time from four yards.

Down by eight, the Eagles needed to come back straight away and once again in this back and forth battle, they did precisely that. Jalen Hurts leading the team 75 yards up the field and completing the drive with his third rushing touchdown of the day.

The QB then brought his team level by converting on a 2-point conversion to tie the game up at 35-35.

Up until now, the game had been a fantastic spectacle, and fans were prepped for an explosive ending, but it didn’t quite turn out that way.

With just over 5 minutes left, the Chiefs received the ball and drove downfield. With just under two minutes left they faced a 3rd and 8 at the Eagles 15-yard line.

The play resulted in an overthrown pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster, but the officials threw a flag and called what looked a harsh penalty for holding on James Bradberry.

That decision was crucial as it gave the Chiefs a fresh set of four downs, allowing them to run down the clock to just 11 seconds, positioning the ball in the centre of the posts for Butker to kick a go-ahead field goal with 8 seconds remaining.

The Eagles tried one final Hail Mary pass, but Hurts arm was deflected as he threw and the ball fell short of the end zone, meaning that the Chiefs had secured a stunning come from behind win.

Score After 4th Quarter – Eagles 35-38 Chiefs

Post-Game Reaction And Quotes

“It felt great until I kind of rolled it a little bit…A lot of soreness going into half time, was able to move it around and get taped up a little bit and go and play that second half. It didn’t feel good, but I was going to leave it all out there. I’m glad it was enough for the win.” – Patrick Mahomes on his ankle injury at the end of the second quarter.

“Gonna be an awkward podcast,” – Eagles center Jason Kelce joking after the game that he is scheduled to do another broadcast with his brother and Chiefs Tight End, Travis, in two days.

“All I know is we’re coming back next year with our heart and the right mindset to try and get another one, I’ll tell you that right now.” – Chiefs Tight End Travis Kelce on the Chiefs future ambitions.

“It was a holding [call]. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide,” Eagles cornerback James Bradberry on that crucial holding penalty call late in the fourth quarter.

“It was like a water park out there,” Eagles offensive lineman Jordan Mailata on the slippery surface the teams played on.
